Exide Technologies has introduced the Solition Powerflex, a modular battery energy storage system designed for commercial and industrial renewable energy integration. The France-based company's new product combines a 261 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a 125 kW bidirectional power conversion system in a single outdoor cabinet.

Serge Arbes, senior business director global, energy solutions at Exide Technologies, said organizations are increasingly seeking to improve energy resilience, integrate renewable generation and optimize energy costs. He added that Solition Powerflex was created to meet these evolving requirements, pairing a scalable architecture with advanced control capabilities. The system is intended for applications including e-mobility infrastructure and agricultural facilities.

Technical design and performance

The system's core specifications are housed in an IP55-rated outdoor cabinet. It uses a dual-loop liquid cooling and heating system for thermal management, with separate circuits for the battery and the power conversion system rated at 5 kW and 3 kW respectively. Nominal round-trip efficiency is 86%, including auxiliary power consumption.

Key physical and operational parameters are as follows:

ParameterSpecification
Cabinet Dimensions1,000 mm x 1,420 mm x 2,250 mm
Weight~2,720 kg
Footprint~1.42 m²
Operating Temperature Range-20°C to 50°C
Power DeratingAbove 45°C
AC Voltage400 V
Frequency50 Hz or 60 Hz

The cabinet integrates the battery management system, energy management system, power conversion system, thermal management, and fire protection equipment. Safety features include automatic aerosol fire suppression, emergency shutdown, audible and visual alarms, explosion relief devices, and a dedicated external firefighting interface.

Scalability and grid-connected applications

Scalability is a central feature. For grid-connected setups, up to 15 cabinets can be paralleled to deliver a maximum combined capacity of 3.915 MWh and a power output of 1.875 MW. Off-grid installations support up to five cabinets.

Each cabinet contains five battery packs, each with a capacity of 52.25 kWh and based on 314 Ah LFP cells. The system supports charging and discharging rates of up to 0.5C. Supported applications for these configurations include peak shaving, self-consumption optimization, spot-market trading, and the provision of ancillary services to the grid.

Control, connectivity and warranty

Control is handled by a European-developed Storage Control System. This platform enables remote monitoring, over-the-air software updates, and interfaces for integration with on-site generation assets, grid operators, and energy markets. Exide noted that its digital architecture encompasses encrypted remote connections, EU-based data hosting, and multilayer access controls.

The company has not disclosed standard warranty terms. Its technical datasheet states that battery capacity and system warranty conditions can be obtained upon request.

Safety and operational features

Beyond the integrated fire suppression, the system is designed for robust operation across diverse environments. The dedicated thermal management system ensures performance within the specified temperature range. The combination of safety systems and remote monitoring aims to provide secure, efficient operation for commercial and industrial energy users looking to manage renewable energy integration.
