U.S. Energy Storage Market Hits Record 18.9 GWh in Q2 2026

The U.S. Energy storage market set a new quarterly record with 18.9 gigawatt-hours of capacity deployed in the second quarter of 2026. Total deployments across all market segments reached 5.4 gigawatts of power capacity, a 7% year-on-year decrease, while energy capacity rose by 16%.
This surge in stored energy reflects a decisive market shift toward longer-duration battery systems. The utility-scale segment dominated, installing 4.7 GW and 17.6 GWh during the quarter. While power output in this segment fell 8% year-over-year, its energy capacity grew by 16%. The average duration of utility-scale battery systems increased from 2.8 to 3.5 hours.
Utility-Scale Dominance and Growth
Utility-scale installations led the market, with deployments for the first half of 2026 exceeding the same period in 2025. This growth is supported by long-duration contracts, compliance procurement, and massive load expansion from artificial intelligence data centers. The sector is expected to maintain steady growth through 2031, aided by ongoing grid interconnection developments.
Residential and Non-Residential Segments
The residential energy storage sector added 676 MW and nearly 1.2 GWh of capacity in Q2 2026. Its energy capacity jumped 48% year-over-year, even as its power capacity saw a modest 3% increase. The vast majority of residential capacity additions came from installations in California, Texas, Puerto Rico, Arizona, and Illinois. Despite this strong quarter, the residential sector is projected to experience a minor full-year contraction in 2026 due to policy adjustments and incentive rollbacks.
The community, commercial, and industrial storage segment deployed 48 MW and 103 MWh in Q2 2026. This segment slipped following elevated first-quarter activity linked to California's Net Energy Metering deadlines, though gains in Hawaii, New Mexico, and Texas offset some domestic contraction.
Market Outlook and Growth Projections
Analysts project the U.S. Storage market will grow more than 50% in megawatt terms over the next five years. The market is forecast to reach 207 GW and 715 GWh of installed capacity by 2031. This optimistic outlook follows the withdrawal of a previous near-term market contraction forecast, citing high project volumes that have started construction to secure Investment Tax Credit safe harbor status.
Trade restrictions may hold back growth in 2026 and 2027, but growth is expected to return in 2028 with a ramp-up in domestic cell manufacturing. Data center demand is expected to drive annual installation growth of 8%. The market's trajectory points toward 207 GW and 715 GWh by 2031 as utility-scale projects secure long-duration contracts for grid adequacy and AI data center demand.
