Axian Energy has signed a power purchase agreement with Africa GreenCo for the 240MW Kudu solar PV plant in Zambia. The project has received financial backing from Standard Bank and its Zambian subsidiary, Stanbic Bank Zambia.

Axian Energy entered Zambia’s energy market last year. It acquired an 85.6% stake in the 54.3MWp Bangweulu Solar plant, located in southern Lusaka Province. Developed by French independent power producer Neoen, Bangweulu was the first utility-scale solar PV project to begin commercial operations in the country. The Pan-African renewables developer now aims to reach 2GW of installed renewable energy capacity across Africa by 2030.

Zambia’s solar pipeline expands

Solar PV activity in Zambia has been rising sharply this year. Several projects have started commercial operation. With three months still remaining in the year, Zambia has already surpassed the 139MW of solar PV installed in 2025. The country was one of eight in Africa to add more than 100MW of PV last year, according to data from the Global Solar Council.

Multiple new developments are advancing. The country’s largest hybrid solar-plus-storage project to date was announced by independent power producer Globeleq. It combines 250MW of solar PV with a 150MW/600MWh battery energy storage system. Indian energy company Nava commissioned a 100MW solar plant last month. Earlier this year, Zambian power company Copperbelt Energy Corporation commissioned the 136MW Itimpi Phase II plant, which used PV inverters supplied by Chinese provider Sungrow.

Furthermore, the Zambian government signed contracts with five contractor groups to develop 312MW of solar capacity through a 2MW constituency solar programme.

Strategic expansion and long-term goals

The Kudu project marks a significant expansion for Axian Energy following its initial entry via the Bangweulu acquisition. The deal with energy aggregator and trader Africa GreenCo supports the developer's continental 2030 target. The project is now moving towards financial close and the construction phase.

Regional momentum and policy backdrop

The broader regional context is one of growing momentum. Ana Hajduka, founder and group CEO of Africa GreenCo, noted that the recent Energy Forum for Africa Conference examined what a borderless energy future looks like. She commented that Africa's borderless power market is already being built by companies trading across it.

The project is moving toward financial close and the construction phase.
