Adani Green Energy expands Khavda battery storage to 6.63
Adani Green Energy Ltd has expanded its operational battery storage capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 GWh within 14 months, now representing over half

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has expanded its operational battery energy storage system capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 GWh. This milestone was achieved within 14 months of commencing on-site construction, with the latest capacity addition commissioned in just 10 months.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy Ltd, said reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. As of June 2026, the company's operational BESS capacity stood at 3.55 GWh.
Technology and grid support capabilities
The BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology, integrated with an energy management system and automated telemetry. This system manages charging and discharging, optimises performance, and supports critical grid services. The 6.63 GWh installation can support the peak electricity demand of major Indian cities like Nagpur, Patna, or Vizag for several hours.
Scale and national significance
The scale of the project is vast. AGEL stated the milestone "consolidates Khavda’s position as the world’s largest operational battery energy storage installation at a single location, with 6.63 GWh of operational capacity". The stored clean energy can power around two million homes daily. It can also meet almost twice the Delhi Metro’s estimated daily electricity requirement. The capacity is equivalent to the battery storage found in more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles.
AGEL’s growing storage dominance and future plans
AGEL now accounts for more than 50 per cent of India’s total operational BESS capacity, which stands at approximately 12.6 GWh. The company is on track to add over 10 GWh of BESS capacity in the current financial year, FY 2026-27. Its broader plan is to reach 50 GWh of storage capacity over the next five years.
Broader strategy and integration
This expansion is part of a strategy to build large-scale, firm and dispatchable renewable power. Battery storage enables power from renewable sources to be stored and dispatched when required, improving grid stability and reducing energy curtailment. Alongside battery storage, AGEL is developing pumped storage projects to further enhance renewable energy integration. The company is developing a massive 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometers of barren land at the same Khavda site.
AGEL is on track to add over 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY 2026-27 as part of its five-year plan to reach 50 GWh of storage capacity.
