CertainTeed has launched the Landmark PWR solar shingle system, a direct-to-deck building-integrated photovoltaic roofing product. The system is designed to replace conventional rack-mounted solar arrays with solar shingles that blend visually with traditional asphalt shingles.

Technical specifications and performance

The Landmark PWR system is based on an 85 W frameless laminate shingle. It features 24 series-connected M10R half-cut monocrystalline cells with an active cell efficiency of 21.1%. Each solar shingle incorporates two bypass diodes to reduce losses from localized shading.

Electrical connections use 12 AWG PV wire and Stäubli MC4 connectors. The system has a maximum voltage rating of 600 volts and a maximum series fuse rating of 15 amps. Each unit weighs 24 pounds and requires a minimum roof pitch of 4:12.

The system combines high-output solar shingles with a specialized fire barrier underlayment for protection. It has been tested to design loads of +2,400/-1,600 Pa and offers ASTM D3161 Class F wind resistance for speeds up to 110 mph. It also provides FM 4473 Class 3 hail impact resistance. The product is pending UL 3741 certification for photovoltaic hazard control.

Underlayment and system integration

CertainTeed pairs the Landmark PWR with its Protect FR underlayment for fire and weather protection. This self-adhering, fiberglass-reinforced underlayment serves as a fire barrier, enabling UL 790/ASTM E108 Class A fire ratings on combustible roof decks. It complies with ASTM D1970 requirements for ice and water protection.

The Protect FR underlayment is rated for application temperatures from -40 degrees Fahrenheit to 265 degrees Fahrenheit. It can withstand up to 180 days of UV exposure. The underlayment features a double-sided split release liner.

It is supplied in 60-pound rolls measuring 35.5 inches by 74 feet. Each roll provides approximately 200 square feet of net coverage when installed with the required 3-inch side laps and 6-inch end laps.

Installation, compatibility, and warranty

The mechanical integration of the Landmark PWR system allows individual shingles to be removed and replaced independently. This process does not disturb adjacent roofing materials or invalidate surrounding roof warranties. The system is compatible with adjacent roofing materials up to one inch thick.

Landmark PWR is compatible with third-party module-level power electronics, including power optimizers and microinverters. CertainTeed backs the product with a 25-year limited power warranty.

The product is pending listing by the California Energy Commission. It is also pending Florida Building Code High Velocity Hurricane Zone approval for peak wind speeds of up to 194 mph.
