BW ESS Buys 126 MW Spanish Battery Storage Portfolio
BW ESS has acquired two standalone battery storage projects in Valencia, Spain, from developer Navacant. The 126 MW/675 MWh portfolio is expected to be ready for construction in 2027.

BW ESS has purchased two utility-scale battery energy storage projects in Spain. The developer acquired the portfolio from Spanish renewable energy and storage firm Navacant.
The projects are located in the Valencia region. They have a combined power capacity of 126 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of up to 675 megawatt-hours. One project is rated at 99 MW and the other at 27 MW.
According to the company, Spain's energy system needs assets that can react swiftly to shifts in electricity supply and demand. BW ESS stated that the scale and grid connection capacity of the projects supported its decision to buy them.
Project Development and Timeline
The projects have been in development for about 18 months. They are expected to reach ready-to-build status in 2027. Commercial operations are targeted for the following year, 2028.
Under the partnership deal, CST Energy will continue leading the remaining development work. CST Energy is one of Navacant's partners. It will use its local market and technical expertise to advance the projects. BW ESS will take over responsibility for construction and delivery once the projects are ready to build.
Strategic Growth in Spain
This acquisition expands BW ESS's presence in the Spanish market. The company has been active there since 2025. BW ESS plans to retain long-term ownership of the two Valencia projects.
Isaac García Moreno, Executive Director at BW ESS, commented on the strategy. "We are targeting significant growth in our Spanish energy storage platform through a combination of greenfield development and acquisitions of high-quality projects at an advanced stage," he said. He added that this requires partnering with developers who understand local dynamics and can execute efficiently.
Broader Market Activity
The deal fits into a wider trend of accelerating project acquisitions in the energy storage sector. According to Mercom's 1H 2026 Funding and M&A for Energy Storage report, activity increased sharply in the first half of 2026.
The report details a significant rise in battery storage capacity changing hands. The data shows 14 GW was transacted in 63 deals during that period. This compares to 6.1 GW across 31 transactions in the first half of 2025.
| Period | Battery Storage Capacity Transacted | Number of Transactions |
|---|---|---|
| 1H 2025 | 6.1 GW | 31 |
| 1H 2026 | 14 GW | 63 |
In a related move noted by the source, solar producer Sonnedix acquired a 260 MW battery storage portfolio in Tuscany, Italy, in July. That portfolio consists of two adjacent standalone projects.
